Development of microwave concentration measurementfor the sugar industry.

Microwave concentration measurement is one of the most modern technologies used in industry for process control. In its early years this technology was used for level indication inside vessels and for moisture measurement in bulk materials.
Since 1996, microwave technology has also been used for the measurement of the dry substance content of syrups and massecuites in the sugar industry.

The very first installations in 1996 were carried out in batch pans only. Due to various improvements during the last 7 years, today this technology is also used in continuous pansand in pipelines of various diameters. Moreover the installation set up and instrument calibration has become much easier compared to that of instruments of the first generation.

The following pages gives a review of the first installation in batch pans and describes the different improvement steps, which have led microwave technology being the most accepted concentration measurement in the sugar industry.
